Upper Elementary Fifth-Grade
Welcome to Russellville Upper Elementary, otherwise known as Upper Elementary 5th Grade or UE5G. Each year, we welcome a brand new group of students to our campus from all six RSD elementary schools in our community.
Our school is a transition between elementary and middle school. We have between 360-400 fifth-grade students each year who are housed in 18 classrooms. Students learn core subjects and attend specialty classes in P.E., music, art, library, and input technologies.
All classrooms are equipped with technology to provide students with rich learning. Interactive whiteboards are used in every classroom. We have a 1:2 ratio for laptops dedicated for student use. Our curriculum is based on the Arkansas state standards and incorporates rigorous learning opportunities to prepare students for success in future grades. In addition to traditional learning activities, we provide learning in non-traditional ways through various field trips, outdoor experiences, service learning projects, games, and contests.
The staff at UE5G works with our school stakeholders to create a positive, nurturing school climate and works to ensure successful student learning. Eighteen classroom teachers focus their core instruction around Arkansas state standards in math, English language arts, social studies and science. Each teacher utilizes best instructional practices to differentiate learning opportunities to meet the individual needs of students. Specialists provide support for learning in the areas of special education, reading intervention, ELL, art, music, P.E., library, input technologies, gifted and talented, guidance counseling, and instructional coaching.
Students attend various field trips to enrich learning throughout the year. Students visit Petit Jean State Park to learn about rocks and minerals in our state and to visit sites studied in Arkansas History. The state capitol is another learning opportunity that provides students with a close-up view of state government in action. Our local judge provides a mock court to illustrate the operation of local government in the community. A favorite learning opportunity happens at fifth-grade camp each spring when our school partners with Arkansas Tech University (ATU) to teach students about the outdoors. Students spend two days learning from ATU Parks and Recreation students. Students canoe, fish, learn archery, arts and crafts, and learn about outdoor conservation and wildlife. Students spend one night at camp participating in team building activities.
In the spring, students begin to plan for sixth-grade where they can join band or choir. Students are tested in fifth-grade and they may choose to try out for various instruments for beginning band or vocal music (in sixth-grade).
UE5G is supported by an active PTO that helps raise money to fund field trips and other special events. The PTO works closely with the principal to provide for any needs that may arise in the school year.
Students learn through service projects. Gifted and talented (G.T.) students take a small gift to a local nursing home each year and sing to the residents. UE5G students also have a holiday food collection contest sponsored by the G.T. classroom. The class who gives the most food items wins a special surprise from the school. Donated items are included in our food backpack program that supports needy families within UE5G.
UE5G has a quiz bowl team that participates in state contests and boasts several trophies of their past accomplishments.
We pride ourselves on making fifth-grade the best ever for our students. We welcome family and community members to be an active part of our school community. We believe that we are stronger when we are all learning and working together.
Thank you for visiting our school website. We hope you will be a part of our school community!
